Things to do in Stavanger

Stavanger is a compact city of around 145,000 people, sitting inside the wider Stavanger/Sandnes urban area often ranked Norway's fourth largest. Use it as a base rather than a checklist: Sola airport (SVG) is about 14 km out, with Kolumbus buses running into the centre, and most fjord and Ryfylke trips start from the harbour or a short drive away.

The climate is mild but wet for the latitude — January hovers around 1-2°C, July around 16-17°C, with roughly 1,180-1,250 mm of rain a year, so pack for showers whatever the season. Stavanger became Norway's oil capital after the Ekofisk field was found offshore in 1969, which still shapes its hotel prices and business-traveller crowd midweek.
