Things to do in Sandnes
Sandnes sits about 15 minutes by train or car from central Stavanger, and the two towns run together into one conurbation, the pairing usually meant when Norway's urban areas are ranked and this one is called the 4th largest in the country.
That makes Sandnes a workable, usually cheaper base: hotel rates tend to run below central Stavanger's, and Kolumbus buses and the Jærbanen train connect the two centres directly, so you are not stuck if you sleep here and want Gamle Stavanger or the Petroleum Museum for the day.
Sandnes itself is a working town rather than a sight in its own right, with a compact centre along the Storåna river and a waterfront that has been redeveloped in recent years. It is also the practical jumping-off point for Jæren's coastline and Dalsnuten's summit, both close by but covered on their own pages rather than here.
