Things to do at Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock)

Preikestolen is a flat plateau at 604 metres above the Lysefjord, with a sheer drop on three sides and no barrier at the edge. The standard route from the Preikestolen fjellstue trailhead is about 8 km round trip, taking 4-5 hours with roughly 350 m of elevation gain.

It is well marked and heavily used, but it is real, uneven mountain terrain, not a paved walk, so allow for slower pace on wet rock. Parking at the trailhead is paid; the trail itself and the plateau are free to enter. Around 300,000 people hike it each year, so expect crowds on the plateau in summer.

Outside roughly May to September, snow and ice make the route considerably harder, and a winter ascent needs proper equipment and experience.
