The Norwegian Petroleum Museum, opened in 1999 on Stavanger's harbour in a building shaped to evoke an offshore platform, covers the industry that transformed the city after the Ekofisk field's discovery in 1969. Viking House covers the region's earlier history, and Stavanger's street-art scene, built up since the Nuart festival started in 2001, doubles as an open-air gallery around the centre. Most of the city's museums are small enough to combine two or three in a single day.
